MBA and executive MBA

The MBA internship cycle, how executive MBA students usually move (sponsored, internal moves, experienced hire routes), and how to use the classroom as practice for the job you want.

Firm processes and online tests change from year to year and differ by office. Use this to prepare, and confirm the exact current steps on the firm's own careers page.

Key takeaways

  • On a full-time MBA, the summer internship is the main door, and recruiting for it starts early.
  • On a two-year programme, the internship sits in the summer between the two years.
  • Firms often recruit for it during the first year, so case practice should start before or soon after you arrive.
  • One firm example. Bain says its Summer Associate role is for MBA students in their penultimate year, in the summer before graduation.

Key idea

On a full-time MBA, the summer internship is the main door, and recruiting for it starts early. On an executive MBA, you keep your job, so your door is usually a move, not an internship.

General patterns (October 2026)

This lesson describes common patterns, not any one employer, unless a source is named. Steps differ by firm, office, country and year. Read the firm's own careers page for your office.

The full-time MBA cycle (general pattern)

  • On a two-year programme, the internship sits in the summer between the two years.
  • Firms often recruit for it during the first year, so case practice should start before or soon after you arrive.
  • One firm example. Bain says its Summer Associate role is for MBA students in their penultimate year, in the summer before graduation.
  • Bain says successful participants get an offer to return as a full-time consultant, without separate interviews.
  • On a one-year programme there is often no summer gap. You apply straight for full-time roles, so the timetable is even tighter.

How executive MBA students usually move (general pattern)

  • Sponsored. Your employer pays some or all of the fees. Many such agreements ask you to stay for a set time afterwards, or repay part of the cost.
  • Internal moves. You move into a strategy, transformation or general management role at your own employer.
  • Experienced hire routes. You apply to firms as an experienced hire, often for roles that value your industry depth.

Use the classroom as practice. Each course case is a chance to state an answer first and back it with numbers. Group projects show you how to lead peers who do not report to you. Classmates from other industries can be your case partners.

Timed math drill

Illustrative. Your executive MBA lasts 20 months. Your sponsorship agreement asks you to stay 24 months after the programme ends. How many months from the start of the programme is your earliest move without repaying?

Check your understanding

On a two-year MBA, when do firms often recruit for the summer internship?
